Security Guard Employers

IF YOU ARE A LICENSED SECURITY GUARD AGENCY, DO NOT REGISTER HERE.

MDSP is requesting that Security Guard Employers complete a brief online registration. A Security Guard Employer must be registered in order to lawfully employ a Security Guard or a Special Police Officer. Please note that registration requires providing proof of commercial general liability insurance in the amount of $500,000 for employment of fewer than 5 security guards or $1,000,000 for employment of 5 or more security guards.

A Security Guard Employer is an entity (a person or company) that employs security guards only to provide security guard services to the entity itself; not to be confused with a Security Guard Agency which is a business that provides security guard services to a third party. “Security Guard Services” includes any activity that is performed for compensation as a security guard to protect any individual or property, except the activities of an individual while performing as a marine guard or ship watchman, a Special Police Officer, or an unarmed employee of a bar, tavern or restaurant.

Security Guard Employers may employ Special Police Officers to provide law enforcement services for the properties listed on their Special Police Commission.
